INTRODUCTION
For almost 30 years I have had the privilege of Dr. Cary Leverett’s friendship. We have developed a long and lasting relationship built on our mutual respect for the wonderful bounty life brings, witnessed best by sharing our commitment to the word of God, and to compassionate patient care, especially in how this care affects children. Our blessings must be used for the greater glory of God. During this friendship, I have worked in the New Braunfels community as a board certified orthopaedic surgeon, with extensive experience in repairing tendons, nerves, and blood vessels. During my training at Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, I was first introduced to the miracle of micro-vascular, microsurgical techniques used to repair hand injuries. This interest in micro-vascular surgery was further enhanced and fortified during my training at University Hospital in San Antonio. I was trained by and have spent my career working with excellent hand surgeons. Also, during my time in private practice, I have attended microsurgical technique conferences, honing my microsurgical skills. As of June 2010 Dr. Leverett has retired. To my great honor, he has asked me to continue his ministry which helps men in re-establishing their ability to father children at an affordable price.
Each year approximately 500,000 men request vasectomies. It is recognized that 5% of them will change their minds, usually due to remarriage, death of a child, or improved circumstances allow for the blessing of more children. Over the past 20 years, the surgical technique of vasovasostomy has greatly improved and has provided excellent results, permitting a man to re-establish his fertility. Nationwide, the surgeon’s fee alone for a vas reversal ranges from $5,000.00 to $15,000.00, and may not include the hospital fees associated with this procedure. This is a cost that is beyond the means of many families.
My total charge for an INITIAL VASECTOMY REVERSAL (vasovasostomy) done under local anesthesia is $3,200.00. There are some incidental costs associated with the procedure which are not included, such as minimal dressings/medical supplies ($20/25) and a prescription antibiotic ($10/12) If the reversal you are considering with us is a REPEAT VASECTOMY REVERSAL which was performed by another surgeon, we must have additional information from you as there are special considerations that must be taken into account in these situations, including, but not limited to, a copy of the operative report by the initial reversal surgeon. Dr. Roeder will review this report and determine if you are a good candidate for a repeat reversal performed in our operating room. The total charge for a REPEAT VASECTOMY REVERSAL which has initially been performed by another surgeon is $3,800.00. Lab work done to evaluate your fertility (semen analysis) after surgery and taking post-operative vitamins are optional and done at your expense. Before having a semen analysis, it is recommended that you wait four to six months. This usually allows time to establish sperm and/or attain pregnancy. To schedule your case, I require a $500.00 deposit, which is non-refundable. This deposit is put on your credit card or debit card at the time of scheduling. The balance owing is due upon arrival for the surgery. It is payable by cash, cashier’s check, or money order. If you would like to pay your balance by debit or credit card, including a health savings account or flexible spending account, there will be an additional $75.00 charge to cover the credit card company processing fee. I do accept CareCredit. If you wish to use your CareCredit account, the total charge for an initial vasectomy reversal is $3,575.00. If your procedure is a repeat vasectomy reversal initially performed by another surgeon, the charge is $4,180.00. I offer the 12 months with no interest option. The entire surgery fee is charged at the time of scheduling the procedure. Sorry, I can not accept personal checks.
I have a free standing surgical room which avoids the costly expenses of a hospital or surgery center based procedure. This not only offers the cost advantage, but the free standing surgical room allows us to seat your wife at the head of the table to minister to you. This program is directed to all families who desire the blessing of more children. This ministry is not restricted in any way. The same costs and care are offered to any family regardless of race, religion, or color.

It is my policy to interview you and your spouse the morning of the surgery. If you have any questions that have not been answered, we will have an opportunity to talk at that time. I prefer you come as a couple because your spouse will play a significant role in your after surgery care. However, there are times when the husband must come alone, and this works out satisfactorily. You will be dismissed the day after surgery; again, however, some choose to return home the same day, and this usually works out well. The vasectomy reversal on average is a 2 hour procedure. The surgery is done as a day patient under local anesthesia. The day of surgery - limit your liquid intake, bring some snug fitting underwear, shave the scrotum and 2 inches further up through the base of the penis toward the belly button.
When you underwent a vasectomy for sterilization, you were informed about the potential complications. The same list of complications still exists for the vasectomy reversal. These complications include, in order of frequency: 1) swelling, 2) pain, 3) hemorrhage/hematoma, 4) infection, 5) testicular atrophy, 6) loss of testicle, 7) loss of life. Pain and swelling are common, but quickly disappear. Hemorrhage/hematoma is less common. This complication may need surgical attention. If surgery is required to drain the hematoma, there would be some expenses associated with the trip to the hospital for the drainage (more medication and additional doctor fees (anesthesia), etc.). This is an additional expense to you. Usually, but not always, this is covered by your medical insurance if you have it. Therefore, if time allows, I recommend staying near the vas-reversal center (one or two days after surgery), so, in the unlikely event this complication occurs, it can be handled by me rather than another doctor back home. Also, if surgical drainage of the hematoma is necessary, the possibility exists that the recent reversal surgery will be jeopardized. This complication occurs less than 1% of the time. Infections are also less common, and they usually respond very well to antibiotics. Loss of testicle and testicular atrophy are very rare. Loss of life is mentioned in the world literature, but few cases are documented.
For those couples experiencing infertility due to a man’s vasectomy, there are some other alternatives to having the vasectomy reversed, but restoration of a man’s fertility by reconnecting the tubes at the site of the previous vasectomy appears to provide couples with the most optimal and least expensive option for building a family. If I can be of any further assistance to you, please do not hesitate to contact me. My office telephone is 830.237.5282, or you may email me at info@vas-reversals.com. It will be my pleasure to communicate with you.
Warmest Regards, Loddie F. Roeder, Jr., M. D.
